:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Stephanie -- Wasn't for me... repetitive with no deeper outcome or complexity outside of basic story outlining. : I was recommended this book by a friend with the idea that this would introduce me to the complex world of addiction. Needless to say, the book was anything but complex. It got to a point where it was extremely repetitive. It got dull and uneventful, with no cohesive thought other than those along the lines of "I'm not sure why I did X... I just thought Y." and that was the ENTIRE book. I feel that the author intended on making you feel discomfort and uneasiness, which the book did accomplish, but I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. There's a difference between feeling uneasiness because you empathize with the character and feeling uneasiness because you're not certain where the character is even going with the book anymore. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lauren Huff -- A Cautionary Tale for Parents and Adolescents : This is one of my favorite memoirs. It is not a "feel good" or inspirational story. It doesn't leave me with the same bad taste in my mouth as "Requiem for a Dream" or other rough stories, but you will not finish this book on Cloud 9. I first read this book at 14, and it made me think twice about my actions through adolescence. There are consequences to your actions, and your emptiness will not be filled by a stream of "casual" partners. The author's uninvolved and benignly neglectful parents play no small role in her struggles, and this more than anything serves as a cautionary tale for parents against the dangers of being uninvolved and distant. But it was also rewarding and redemptive by the end. She writes "clear and hard about what hurts." For those reading this for titillation or escapism, you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for a harrowing, but ultimately satisfying healing journey, you'll find it here. Loose Girl is filled with self-destructive behavior, small victories, setbacks when coping mechanisms fail, a moment of empowerment when Cohen decides to take ownership of her healing, and then embraces self-love and reconnection with others who love and support her. Made me realise how much worse it must be for some girls now , as this is after all a teenager growing up in the 1980s , when times were far less sexual .
